A Conscious Reminder

Honesty changes everything,
but you can’t see yourself when you refuse to look.
Fear, resentment, and anger
have stolen your hours.

Friendship matters. Appearances don’t.
Misguided notions of necessity are as useless
as the imaginary ideals we impose on others.
Chiseling a proper likeness from marble
is still working with stone.

I used to ask others to serve as my fantasy, superstition, or lie.
Now, I try to listen to my own symphony of thoughts
in order to reinvent myself in the moment.
What I can’t control must be left alone.
