World Record Trout No Fish Story

Every fisherman has one, a story about the one that got away. It always involves the biggest fish ever seen, and how it was “almost” caught. Otwin Kandolf, however, won’t have a story like that because he actually caught a once-in-a-lifetime legend.

His claim to fishing fame? A 42 pound, 1 ounce brown trout, caught in a canal near a salmon farm. It is the heaviest brown trout ever caught in New Zealand and could land him a place in the record books.  According to the International Game Fish Association, the current all-tackle record holder weighed in at 41 pounds, 8 ounces.

This monster measures in at an incredible 36.6 inches long and 10.6 inches wide. How did it get so fat? Not off McDonalds and bacon cheddar fries. Pellets from the salmon farm upstream apparently allowed this little fishie to become a record breaker. Kandolf plans on having the fish mounted. How’s that for a conversation starter?
