Carbon

You are alive in the earth, sun, sea, and air,
born of unexploded stars, the detritus of white dwarves,
permeating the Galaxy at a slow, steady rate
and infusing yourself into organic matter.
You float on a baby’s breath to nearby plants
that convert you into the growth energy needed
to feed us all and power the planet.
Even at the bottom of the ocean, your rich presence
turns sediment into rock and stores itself in methane
that will, as temperatures rise, blend with the sky and spell our end.
You are the ancient master of chemical communion,
forever in motion, the requisite to consciousness,
serving as the basis of our existence from birth to death,
the most alluring atomic structure.
